Biography
WORCESTER – Irving J. Coven, 91, of North Providence, RI, died peacefully on October 16, 2015 at The Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence.
His wife, Jean (Ginsburg) Coven, died in 2000. He leaves his very dear friend and companion, Sally M. Greenberg of North Providence; two sons, Robert Coven, and his wife, Joanne Zaiac of New York City, and Steven Coven of Worcester; a daughter, Deborah Brown of Parrish, FL; four grandchildren, Jeremy Frankel, Samantha Coven, Joshua Coven and Erica Jean Coven. He was predeceased by his brother, Julius Coven and his sisters, Anita Freeman and Irene Luboda.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Joseph and Lillian (Saslavsky) Coven, and had lived in Worcester for 73 years before moving to North Providence in 1997.
He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He studied at Northeastern University, Boston University and Harvard University evening schools.
He was former editor of the Jewish Civic Leader, owner of Irving Coven Construction and Realty Company, Vice President of Herbert Engineering and in retirement was owner of the former Acapulco Restaurant on Highland Street in Worcester. He was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award by the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
He was a member of the Worcester Housing Committee, Worcester Rent Review Board, Worcester Human Rights Commission and Worcester Housing Authority and was awarded the Key to the city by Worcester City Council. He was elected for 5 consecutive terms as President of the Rental Housing Association of Worcester County, served as Scoutmaster and was a member of the Boy Scout Commission, a member of National Conference of Crime and Delinquency, Director of NAACP, former Commander of Post # 32 of Jewish War Veterans, was the National Chief of Staff of Americanism Committee of Jewish War Veterans of The United States. He was appointed a Research Affiliate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was an alternate member of Human Affairs Committee of Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence. In his later years in Providence, Irvin was a dedicated volunteer at both the Patient and Family Education Center at Butler Hospital and at Miriam Hospital. He was a patient counselor at University Hospital in Florida. He did extensive teaching and lecturing on business management and human relations.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 1 PM ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, AT TEMPLE EMANUEL SINAI, 661 SALISBURY, WORCESTER. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery in Worcester. Memorial Observance will be held through 8 pm Sunday, October 18 at the home of Paula Freeman and Jeremy Soybel, 33 Whisper Dr., Worcester.
