Barry was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Samuel H. and Fannie (Rome) Waldstein. The family moved to Staten Island, New York in 1929, where Barry attended schools. He served in the Philippines while in the U.S. Army during World War II , and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a graduate of New York University where he received a B.S. in Education and M.A. in Art. He taught at Tottenville High School on Staten Island, where he was a popular teacher of art and photography until he retired. A frequent summer vacationer in Mexico, he decided to spend his retirement in San Miguel. Surviving him are two sisters and a brother, in the United States, Barry also leaves a family acquired via education, fostering two children he soon came to consider 'his boys'. Barry's family is grateful for the attention and care given to him in his illness, especially that by Francisco, the elder boy and his extended family. Francisco son, Eric, was like the grandchild Barry never had. Barry never ceased bragging about Eric and also about Daniel, Eric's five year old uncle.
