      DR. SYDNEY LANG, 91
Clinic chief at Staten Island University Hospital
      Friday, May 12, 2006
Dr. Sydney L. Lang, 91, a former Staten Islander and retired family practitioner, died Wednesday at his home in Red Bank, N.J.
Born in Manhattan in 1914, he became a Staten Islanderby adoption when he married Dorothy Fisher in 1938 and the couple settled in West Brighton. Dr. Lang moved to Red Bank in 2004.
After graduating from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1938, he was in his third year of a rotating internship and family practice residency at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn when he was called to military service in May 1941.
The U.S. Army Medical Corps appointed him a captain, and he remained in the Army until June 1946, having served in the Pacific.
Dr. Lang was a family practitioner for many years. He was an attending physician in the family practice service and an associate attending physician in the department of medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, first at its former Tompkinsville location and later at the Ocean Breeze site. There, Dr. Lang was chief of the clinic to diagnose and treat rheumatism and arthritis -- a position to which he was appointed in 1968.
A diplomate of the American Academy of Family Practice, he also was board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
He was a member of the American Academy of General Practice and the American Academy of Family Physicians; past president of the Richmond County chapter of the Academy of Family Physicians, and a former consultant for the family practice department at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
In 1989, he retired from active practice when his wife became ill, but continued to serve University Hospital until 2003, working as medical director of case management and quality utilization.
Dr. Lang's family said he greatly missed no longer being in active practice and being asked to evaluate and manage the infirmities and disabilities of his patients. Even more so, he missed the privilege of knowing all those wonderful people.
His wife, Dorothy, a dermatologist, died in 1990.
Surviving are his two sons, Nicholas R. and Eric A.; his daughter, Lisa M. Green, and four grandchildren.
The funeral service is scheduled for today at noon in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. The arrangements include cremation.
